Righton set sail aboard RRS David Attenborough

The team at Righton Manchester are delighted to have provided materials, parts and expertise that contributed to the recent completion of the RRS Sir David Attenborough.

Commissioned by the UK Government in 2014, the ship was officially launched on 14th July 2018 following a £150m build that lasted just under two years. The RRS Sir David Attenborough is a specially equipped polar research vessel that will operate as part of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and has replaced two existing ships.

Righton’s Manchester team have worked closely with Birkenhead-based shipbuilders Cammell Laird during their construction of the vessel, designing and manufacturing the following essential materials for the project:

  • Aluminium plate grade 5083 H321 3.2
  • Aluminium sections grade 6082 T6
  • Range of copper nickel 90/10 pipe fittings
  • Tri-plate aluminium structures

These bespoke items were used in the construction of many key structures on the vessel, including the wheel house and funnel, water supply and engine room and the steel hull. This has offered a fantastic experience for our team and we are proud to have provided high-calibre products for use on such a prestigious project.
